The new utility is just better behaved, comes with an installer, has actual error messages, and eventually will do some other neat tricks I've heard people ask for - including syncing the camera time with the PC (which the EOS Utility will also do), editing the owner, artist, and copyright fields - including special characters (which the EOS utility disallows), and an online check of the firmware version. DLL incompatability by having an installer that installs the software and compatible DLLs elsewhere, and hopefully we'll be able to answer the firmware question. I wrote software to retrieve the shutter count value: Starting with the 40D the shutter count number was/is accessible via Canon's EOS Digital Software Development Kit, using an undocumented (but available in one of the header files) parameter value with an existing function call. The shutter count from EOS cameras with DiGC III and later processors up to cameras released by the end of 2014 make the shutter count available through the remote controlled interface that may be accessed on the camera via a USB connection.
